Microsoft Enhances Visual Studio with New Copilot Controls

Microsoft has responded to developer feedback by introducing new features aimed at reducing distractions in its Visual Studio 2022 integrated development environment (IDE). The updates, included in the August 2025 release (version 17.14.13), enhance the functionality of GitHub Copilot, allowing developers greater control over coding assistance.

One significant improvement is the introduction of a “debounce” buffer, which delays the appearance of code completions after keystrokes. Previously, suggestions would appear and disappear rapidly with each keystroke, leading to interruptions in workflow. Now, developers can adjust settings to make the coding process more fluid and less distracting.

For those seeking even more precise control, Microsoft has implemented an option for developers to request code completions explicitly. By using a designated keyboard shortcut or a command, developers can prompt Copilot to suggest code, which will then be displayed in a hint bar. If multiple suggestions are available, users can cycle through these options using the same shortcut. This feature allows for a more streamlined coding experience, as developers can choose when to engage with suggestions.

Another enhancement involves the management of next edit suggestions (NES). Developers can now opt to hide these suggestions until they choose to display them by pressing a specific key or clicking an indicator in the gutter space of the IDE. This feature minimizes distractions and allows for a more focused coding environment. When suggestions are visible, developers can either accept or dismiss them easily.

Additionally, the updated Copilot now supports partial code completions, allowing users to accept one word or one line at a time through keyboard shortcuts. This granular approach offers flexibility in how developers interact with the tool, catering to different coding styles and preferences.
