LA Opera has announced the cast for its highly anticipated premiere of “West Side Story,” set to take place from September 20 to October 12, 2025. This production marks a significant milestone as part of the company’s 40th Anniversary Season and has been in planning for over a decade.

In a statement, LA Opera President and CEO Christopher Koelsch expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming show, noting, “We have wanted to present ‘West Side Story’ for well over a decade, and all of the elements—including a cast featuring both opera stars and incredible musical theater performers—have finally come into place.”

The production will feature acclaimed conductor James Conlon, who is celebrating his 20th and final season as music director with LA Opera. Conlon has long been eager to conduct the groundbreaking score of “West Side Story,” which he believes will resonate with audiences in unexpected ways. He remarked, “Under my baton, ‘West Side Story’ will likely surprise audiences no matter how well they think they may know it.”

Star-Studded Cast and Visionary Direction

Leading the cast are Gabriella Reyes and Duke Kim, who will portray the iconic roles of Maria and Tony. They will be joined by a talented ensemble including Amanda Castro, Taylor Harley, Yurel Echezarreta, and David Prottas. The production will be directed by Francesca Zambello, a veteran of LA Opera known for her dedication to American works. Zambello’s extensive experience and vision are expected to elevate this classic musical to new heights.

The choreography for the production will be recreated by Joshua Bergasse, paying homage to the original work by the legendary Jerome Robbins. This collaboration promises to deliver a fresh yet authentic interpretation of the beloved musical.

As LA Opera prepares for this premiere, the anticipation continues to build. The combination of a celebrated cast, an experienced creative team, and a renowned conductor sets the stage for a remarkable theatrical experience that aims to captivate audiences from its opening night onwards.
