Bentz Defends Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” Against Kotek’s Criticism
Cliff Bentz, Oregon’s sole Republican congressman, has publicly responded to criticism from Governor Tina Kotek regarding President Donald Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill,” formally known as H.R. 1. Bentz argues that the legislation, which has faced significant opposition from Democrats, provides substantial benefits that Kotek has overlooked. In a statement released on August 19, 2025, Bentz contended that Kotek’s portrayal of the bill is misleading and fails to consider its positive implications for Oregonians.
The “One Big Beautiful Bill” seeks to implement sweeping changes to tax and spending policies. Critics highlight potential cuts to essential programs, including the Oregon Health Plan, which serves many low-income residents. According to Kotek, the state could lose over $15 billion in federal funding affecting healthcare, food assistance, and other critical services. She described the bill as a betrayal of American families, warning that it could lead to increased hunger and health issues among vulnerable populations.
Bentz countered these assertions, stating that the bill addresses inefficiencies in state-run programs. He pointed out that Oregon currently provides over two years of continuous Medicaid eligibility for many adults, even those whose incomes exceed federal thresholds. The new legislation would require states to conduct eligibility reviews twice annually starting in 2027, a move Bentz argues will help ensure that Medicaid serves those who truly need it, including seniors and individuals with disabilities.
Kotek also raised concerns about the impact on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), commonly known as food stamps. Her office estimates that Oregon may lose $3 billion in federal SNAP funding due to new work requirements and penalties for high payment error rates, which have been a significant issue for the state. In 2024, Oregon recorded a SNAP error rate of over 14%, leading to substantial fines from the federal government.
In his defense, Bentz acknowledged the importance of accountability in state programs but emphasized that the reforms are not designed to cut coverage. He criticized Kotek for failing to mention beneficial provisions in the bill, including $10 billion in tax cuts for farmers and ranchers, disaster relief funding, and support for military initiatives and border security.
Bentz’s support for the bill has drawn ire from his fellow Oregon Democrats, who have been vocal about the potential repercussions for rural health care. Last week, Representative Janelle Bynum attended an event in Madras, located within Bentz’s district, to rally against the Medicaid cuts associated with the bill. Bynum publicly questioned Bentz’s absence from the discussion, highlighting the growing concern among Oregon’s congressional delegation regarding the legislation’s impact.
In light of the heated debate, Bentz issued a comprehensive statement addressing Kotek’s comments, asserting that her remarks misrepresent the legislation’s objectives. He urged Oregonians to assess the bill’s provisions themselves, emphasizing its potential for economic growth and higher wages.
The ongoing discourse around the “One Big Beautiful Bill” reflects a broader national conversation about fiscal policy, social services, and the responsibilities of state and federal governments. As the implications of this legislation unfold, the diverging views of Bentz and Kotek will likely continue to shape the political landscape in Oregon and beyond.
