Study Reveals How “Bluey” Teaches Resilience to Young Viewers

A recent study has shown that the popular animated series Bluey can effectively teach children about resilience, a crucial skill for coping with life’s challenges. Researchers analyzed all 150 episodes from the show’s first three seasons, revealing that nearly half contained clear messages about resilience. The findings suggest that the show not only entertains but also equips young viewers with important life lessons.
Resilience is vital for healthy child development. It encompasses the ability to handle stress, adapt to setbacks, and recover from difficulties. Without resilience, children may face increased risks of anxiety, depression, and poor coping skills as they grow older. As mental health challenges among children rise, early interventions become essential. A 2023 national resilience survey indicated that over one in four primary students and one in three secondary students in Australia reported experiencing high levels of psychological distress.
How “Bluey” Models Resilience
The study, conducted by researchers at CQUniversity, utilized the Grotberg Resilience Framework, a psychological model that identifies three core elements of resilience: “I have,” “I can,” and “I am.” The researchers focused on how the characters in Bluey demonstrate these elements through their interactions.
Of the episodes analyzed, 73 included resilience themes, with a significant number of these moments facilitated by parental figures, particularly Bluey’s mother. In one episode titled “The Show” from season two, Bingo experiences distress after dropping a breakfast tray. Her mother models emotional regulation by expressing her feelings and demonstrating how to cope: “I have a little cry, I pick myself up, dust myself off, and keep going.” This approach aligns with research indicating that when caregivers model emotional responses, children learn to manage their own feelings more effectively.
In another instance, the episode “Keepy Uppy” showcases Bluey and her sister responding to disappointment with a positive attitude. When the final balloon pops, they pause, reflect, and cheerfully state, “Well, that was fun.” This moment encapsulates emotional regulation and the ability to reframe situations, highlighting the “I can” aspect of resilience.
The Importance of Everyday Moments
The characters in Bluey frequently demonstrate inner strength and self-confidence. For example, in the episode “Seesaw,” a character named Pom Pom displays determination, stating, “Pomeranians are a small but hardy breed,” as she overcomes a challenge. These moments not only entertain but also teach children essential life skills, including empathy, problem-solving, and self-regulation.
In “Sheepdog,” Bluey’s mother communicates her need for personal space, reminding viewers that even caregivers require time to recharge. This simple interaction illustrates self-care and empathy, reinforcing the message that adults also experience stress and need support.
The study highlights that while screen time cannot replace real-life relationships, shows like Bluey can serve as valuable teaching tools. When parents watch alongside their children, they can engage in meaningful conversations about the characters’ experiences. Questions such as “What do you think Bluey felt then?” or “How would you handle that situation?” encourage children to reflect on their emotions and develop coping skills.
The insights from this research reinforce the significance of integrating resilience-building practices into children’s lives. As Bluey continues to resonate with families worldwide, its portrayal of resilience provides an accessible model for young viewers to navigate life’s challenges with confidence.
The original research was contributed by CQUniversity student Kelly Bohl and Mary Bolling, co-host of the Bluey podcast “Gotta Be Done.” The findings were published in an article that emphasizes the potential of storytelling in children’s media as a tool for teaching vital life skills.
