Trump Warns Russia of Sanctions as Envoy Prepares Moscow Visit

President Donald Trump announced the potential for further sanctions against Russia as military actions against Ukraine persist. Speaking to reporters, Trump indicated that special envoy Steve Witkoff is scheduled to visit Moscow “next week, Wednesday or Thursday,” as part of diplomatic efforts amidst escalating tensions. The deadline set by Trump for Russia to cease hostilities expires on March 10, 2024, prompting heightened scrutiny over Moscow’s actions.
When questioned about possible measures Russia could take to avoid sanctions, Trump responded, “Yeah, get a deal where people stop getting killed.” He highlighted the significant loss of life on both sides, describing the situation as a “ridiculous war.” The president expressed optimism about resolving the conflict, stating, “Somehow we are gonna get this one stopped. We stopped a lot of wars and this one should be the easiest to stop and it’s not.”
Trump reiterated his stance that sanctions would be imposed if the war continues, but acknowledged Russia’s historical ability to evade such penalties. “You know, they’re wily characters and they’re pretty good at avoiding sanctions. So we’ll see what happens,” he remarked. Additionally, he confirmed the deployment of American submarines to the region, stating, “They are in the region, yeah, where they have to be.”
Diplomatic Efforts and Concerns Over the Conflict
During a recent statement, Matthew Whitaker, the US Ambassador to NATO, emphasized the need for a negotiated settlement to bring an end to the conflict. “I think President Trump has been pretty clear that this war in Ukraine is not going to be settled on the battlefield. Ultimately, it’s got to be negotiated and there needs to be peace,” he said.
The situation remains dire in Odessa, where Russian drone attacks on Monday resulted in fires at local electronics stalls, according to reports from the Kyiv Post. These attacks highlight the ongoing violence and destruction in the region as Russia continues to assert that any settlement must involve Ukraine renouncing its aspirations to join NATO and recognizing “new territorial realities.”
The international community watches closely as diplomatic efforts unfold, with the future of peace dependent on both parties’ willingness to negotiate and halt hostilities. As Witkoff prepares for his upcoming trip, all eyes remain on Moscow to see if a resolution to this ongoing crisis can be achieved.
