Pope Leo XIV Inspires Over 1 Million Youths at Jubilee Mass

Pope Leo XIV addressed over 1 million Catholic youths on March 31, 2024, during a Mass that concluded a weeklong gathering in Rome. He encouraged them to “spread your enthusiasm and the witness of your faith” as they return to their communities across approximately 150 countries. This event marked a significant moment in the ongoing Jubilee of Youth, which aims to rejuvenate faith among the younger generation.

During his address, Leo urged attendees to “Aspire to great things, to holiness, wherever you are,” emphasizing that they should not settle for mediocrity. The Pope expressed confidence that their commitment would lead to the light of the Gospel flourishing in their lives and surroundings.

The youths had camped overnight in expansive fields southeast of Rome, having participated in a vigil service the previous evening. The event drew not only the young faithful but also 7,000 priests and 450 bishops, highlighting the immense scale of this spiritual gathering. The Vatican reported that this Jubilee celebration is part of a larger Holy Year expected to attract 32 million visitors to the Vatican, reinforcing its significance within the Catholic community.

The week featured a vibrant atmosphere, with groups of young people singing hymns as they navigated Rome’s cobblestoned streets, praying in public squares, and waiting in long lines at the Circus Maximus for the opportunity to confess their sins. The sacrament was offered in a dozen languages, emphasizing the event’s international reach.

On a somber note, Pope Leo XIV also shared tragic news about the loss of two young pilgrims during the week. One reportedly died from cardiac arrest, while a third was hospitalized. Despite a rain-soaked night that disrupted their rest, the spirits of the attendees remained high.

One participant, Soemil Rios, a 20-year-old from Puerto Rico, reflected on the experience, stating, “At least we were a little covered, but we still got a bit wet. It was cold, but we woke up to a beautiful sun and view. Despite the difficulties, it was very nice and very special to have been part of this historic moment.”

Sister Giulia De Luca, who attended the gathering from Rome, acknowledged the challenges of waking up in wet conditions but looked forward to the conclusion of the week. “It will be very nice to conclude a very intense week together. Definitely a lot of fun, but also very challenging in many ways,” she said.
