San Diego FC Falls Short in Leagues Cup Opener Against Pachuca

San Diego FC experienced a challenging start to its inaugural international competition, suffering a 3-2 defeat against C.F. Pachuca on July 25, 2023, at Snapdragon Stadium. The Liga MX side dominated much of the match, leading by three goals before San Diego mounted a late comeback that ultimately fell short.
The match began with Pachuca taking control early on. They scored their first goal in the 23rd minute when midfielder Victor Guzmán headed the ball into the bottom central zone of the net. Just before halftime, Pachuca’s forward Alexéi Dominguez doubled the lead with a left-footed shot from the center of the goal, pushing the score to 2-0.
Dominguez’s impactful performance continued into the second half, as he secured his brace with another goal in the 48th minute, this time connecting with a right-footed shot that found the top left corner. San Diego, despite starting the match with energy, struggled to maintain momentum and fell behind 3-0.
In a moment of frustration, San Diego’s leading scorer, Anders Dreyer, received a red card in the 92nd minute for an apparent intentional trip on an opposing player. As a result, he will be suspended for San Diego’s next match, adding to the team’s challenges moving forward.
Despite the early setbacks, San Diego managed to score two late goals in stoppage time. Emmanuel Boateng found the net first in the 88th minute with a right-footed shot directed to the lower left corner. Luca Bombino then followed suit, scoring with a header in the 100th minute, but it was not enough to change the outcome of the match.
The game marked a significant milestone for San Diego’s Hirving Lozano, a player with a storied past at Pachuca. This was the first time he faced his former team, although he did not contribute any goals or assists before being substituted in the 72nd minute.
Looking ahead, San Diego FC will face Club Tigres on July 28 at 20:00, also at Snapdragon Stadium, as the Leagues Cup continues. Following that, the team will host Mazatlán FC on August 5.
In addition to the match developments, San Diego FC announced the acquisition of two midfielders on July 24. David Vazquez has joined on loan from the Philadelphia Union, with a deal involving $50,000 in General Allocation Money for 2025 and 2026. Pedro Soma was also signed from Spain’s UE Cornellà, securing a guaranteed contract through 2027, with a club option for 2028.
The loss in the Leagues Cup opener serves as a sobering reminder of the challenges ahead for San Diego FC as they adapt to international competition.
