Trump Administration Pushes Policies Reshaping Higher Education

The Trump administration’s initiatives to reshape higher education are intensifying, with significant implications for institutions across the United States. A notable example is the recent actions in Indiana, where Governor Mike Braun has taken steps that critics argue undermine university governance and academic freedom.
In Indiana, alumni advocate Ken Beckley has mobilized support among graduates to oppose Braun’s decision to remove three alumni-elected members from the Indiana University Board of Trustees. Beckley, who previously led the alumni association, views this as an attempt at government overreach, reminiscent of the escalating tensions surrounding Harvard University. The Trump administration’s scrutiny of Harvard has culminated in the freezing of billions of dollars in federal funding as it seeks to enforce policy changes.
This trend is not limited to Harvard. Across the country, officials in conservative states are targeting public universities, alleging issues like excessive liberalism and mounting student debt. Actions began with a focus on critical race theory and expanded to include diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. Since the start of Trump’s presidency, states such as Indiana, Florida, Ohio, Texas, Iowa, and Idaho have increasingly emphasized their influence over university governance, including selection processes for university leadership and curriculum control.
Conservative Leadership in Indiana and Beyond
In Indiana, Braun’s appointments aim to steer the university “back in the right direction.” His new trustees include an anti-abortion attorney and a former ESPN host, both selected amid heightened scrutiny of hiring practices at state colleges. Indiana’s Attorney General, Todd Rokita, has also targeted the legality of DEI initiatives at prominent institutions like the University of Notre Dame and Butler University.
In Florida, the state university system board recently rejected the appointment of academic Santa Ono as president of the University of Florida, despite unanimous approval from the school’s Board of Trustees. Criticism from conservatives regarding Ono’s support for DEI programs prompted this unprecedented decision. Additionally, the New College of Florida, once regarded as a progressive institution, has undergone significant changes following the appointment of conservative board members by Governor Ron DeSantis.
Changes in governance are occurring with limited resistance at many public universities. In Iowa, new DEI restrictions are set to take effect, while the board overseeing the state’s universities is considering similar measures to those enacted in Idaho, where a law restricts DEI-related course requirements for graduation.
Concerns About Academic Freedom
The recent initiatives have sparked widespread concerns regarding the erosion of academic independence from political influence. Isaac Kamola, director of the Center for the Defense of Academic Freedom at the American Association of University Professors, highlights the challenges posed by both state legislatures and the federal government.
In Texas, Governor Greg Abbott enacted laws that impose restrictions on student protests and grant appointed boards increased powers over university curricula. Advocacy group Cameron Samuels from Students Engaged in Advancing Texas warns that controlling the dissemination of ideas threatens the future of democracy.
As students and faculty at various institutions organize against these initiatives, the broader implications for higher education remain significant. The actions taken by state officials reflect a strategic move to reshape academic frameworks in ways that reflect conservative ideologies.
The ongoing situation illustrates a critical moment for higher education in the United States, with potential long-term effects on the academic landscape and the principles of educational independence.
