Michigan Launches Investigation into Athletic Department Culture

The University of Michigan has engaged the Chicago-based law firm Jenner & Block to investigate the culture and operational practices of its athletic department. This decision follows the recent firing of head football coach Sherrone Moore, which is part of a series of controversies that have plagued Michigan athletics in recent years.

The investigation comes in light of allegations surrounding Moore’s conduct, specifically an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. Earlier this fall, Michigan received an anonymous tip prompting Jenner & Block to initiate an inquiry into Moore. Although the initial investigation did not yield sufficient evidence to substantiate the claims, the situation escalated when the staff member reported the relationship to university officials. Moore was subsequently fired on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, and later arrested as part of ongoing investigations into the matter.

In the wake of these developments, Michigan has broadened the scope of Jenner & Block’s investigation to encompass the entire athletic department. This move reflects the university’s commitment to addressing a troubling pattern of scandals, particularly within the football program.

Over the past four years, Michigan athletics has faced several significant controversies, including accusations of an impermissible sign-stealing operation. Former analyst Connor Stalions is alleged to have coordinated staffers and associates to scout opponents’ games in person from 2021 to 2023. Additionally, the program is under scrutiny for violations related to recruitment practices during the COVID-19 pandemic, which could have repercussions for former head coach Jim Harbaugh and the football program in 2024.

Despite these numerous scandals, Warde Manuel, the athletic director who has led the department since 2016, remains in his position. The relationship between Michigan and Jenner & Block is longstanding; the firm previously investigated former university president Mark Schlissel, who was dismissed for having an inappropriate relationship with a university employee in 2022.

As the investigation continues, the university aims to foster a more transparent and accountable environment within its athletic programs, addressing the issues that have emerged and ensuring a healthier culture moving forward.
