Longtime Educator Harold Klonecky Passes Away at 98
Harold Meredith Klonecky, a beloved educator and community member, passed away at the age of 98 in Torrance, California, on November 16, 2025. Born to Irma and Constant Klonecky in Dickinson, North Dakota, on May 22, 1927, his life was marked by a commitment to education and community service.
Dr. Klonecky earned a Bachelor’s degree in English and Drama from Dickinson State University. He began his teaching career in North Dakota before relocating to California in 1955. In Torrance, he taught English at North High School and later advanced his education by obtaining a Doctorate of Education from the University of Southern California (USC). His 25-year tenure at Torrance High School included roles as Assistant Principal and Principal until his retirement in 1987.
A Legacy of Kindness and Engagement
Known for his patience and kindness, Dr. Klonecky earned the admiration of students, faculty, and parents alike. Even in his later years, he remained active within the Torrance High School community, engaging with retirees and participating in various activities. His passion for education extended beyond the classroom; he was also an avid golfer and enjoyed reading mystery novels.
Dr. Klonecky was particularly recognized for his enthusiasm for dance. He was a skilled dancer, often sought after as a partner at social events, embodying the joy of community engagement. His compassion extended to both animals and people, reflecting the warmth he brought into the lives of those around him.
He is survived by his family, including Theresa and Jeff Heiney and their son, Erick; Jen and Patrick Sullivan and their children Kieran, Aidan, Declan, and Bridget. Dr. Klonecky was predeceased by his son, Christopher Klonecky.
Celebration of Life
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Dr. Klonecky’s life on December 15, 2025. A Visitation and Rosary will take place from 16:00 to 20:00 at Coastal Funeral Center, located at 25001 Narbonne Avenue, Lomita. A Funeral Mass will follow on December 16, 2025, at 10:00 at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, situated at 25511 Eshelman Avenue, Lomita.
After the Mass, attendees are welcome to join for a reception at Hof’s Hut at 11:30 at 23635 Crenshaw Boulevard in Torrance. This gathering will provide an opportunity to honor a life well lived and the lasting impact Dr. Klonecky had on his community.
