Gophers QB Drake Lindsey Commits to 2026 Season Return
Quarterback Drake Lindsey has announced his return to the Gophers football program for the 2026 season, solidifying his commitment to the team as he enters his redshirt sophomore year. In a recent interview on the Go Gopher Podcast, Lindsey expressed his enthusiasm about continuing his development at the University of Minnesota.
“There was no doubt in my mind, and I’m really excited to come back for another year here,” Lindsey said to host Mike Grimm. He discussed finalizing a revenue-sharing contract and a Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deal with the Gophers and its Dinkytown Athletes collective shortly after the team’s victory over Wisconsin, where they claimed the Paul Bunyan’s Axe on November 29.
Lindsey emphasized that his decision was not solely about financial incentives. “They took care of me, and it’s really not even about that,” he stated. “It’s just about being in the right system. I really feel like I’m getting developed here… the ultimate goal is to take this place to new heights and play in the NFL.”
With the Rate Bowl against New Mexico scheduled for December 26, Lindsey has completed 63% of his passes this season, throwing for 2,235 yards, with 16 touchdowns and six interceptions across 12 games. He acknowledged the progress he has made this year, saying, “I really feel like I took a huge step this year. When I look back from freshman year to now, I see huge increases in every part of my life, not just football.”
Lindsey’s season has included standout performances, such as a four-touchdown game against Northwestern. He has also led game-tying or game-winning drives against teams like Rutgers, Purdue, and Michigan State. Despite facing challenges in losses against Iowa, Ohio State, and Oregon, these experiences have contributed to his growth as a player.
Looking ahead to the next season, Lindsey will have to adjust to the loss of his top target, Le’Meke Brockington. However, he will still have access to talented pass-catching options, including receivers Javon Tracy and Jalen Smith, as well as running back Darius Taylor.
As Lindsey prepares for the upcoming bowl game and the 2026 season, his commitment to furthering his skills and helping the Gophers achieve greater success remains evident. His determination to grow both as a quarterback and a person is a promising sign for the program’s future.
