Elon Musk Reflects on DOGE Agency’s Limited Success in Podcast
In a recent interview, Elon Musk described his tenure leading the Department of Government Efficiency as “somewhat successful” while expressing reluctance to repeat the experience. Musk’s comments came during a conversation with Katie Miller, a conservative influencer and former aide, on the “Katie Miller Podcast.”
Musk, who is also the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, noted the challenges associated with rapidly reforming federal government operations. He stated, “We were a little bit successful. We were somewhat successful,” reflecting on the impact of his work with the agency, which focused on streamlining government processes. Despite this, he acknowledged that his businesses suffered due to his involvement with the agency and its limited appeal.
When asked if he would undertake the same initiative again, Musk replied, “I don’t think so. … Instead of doing DOGE, I would have, basically, built … worked on my companies.” He reminisced that had he not been involved with DOGE, his companies would not have faced significant consumer backlash, referring to protests against Tesla’s vehicles.
Musk’s comments come after a tumultuous period following his departure from the Trump administration, where he led the DOGE initiative until it officially closed last month. The agency aimed to eliminate wasteful government spending, and Musk claimed it could save up to $200 billion annually by reducing “zombie payments” through improved automation and coding of federal payouts. However, this figure pales in comparison to his earlier, more ambitious projections for potential savings in the trillions.
During the podcast, which lasted over 50 minutes, the discussion also touched on various topics including artificial intelligence, social media, conspiracy theories, and fashion. While Miller did not delve into the controversial aspects of DOGE’s operations, Musk’s reflections provide insight into his priorities and challenges during his brief government service.
Despite the setbacks associated with DOGE, Musk’s fortunes have recently improved. Shareholders of Tesla approved a substantial pay package that could position him to become the world’s first trillionaire. This financial boost indicates a positive trajectory for Musk as he returns his focus to his primary business ventures.
The podcast episode sheds light on Musk’s perspective regarding government efficiency initiatives and his future intentions, as he continues to navigate his roles in the private sector and the broader public discourse.
