Pastor Arrested After Refusing Court-Ordered Apology in Calgary

A street preacher in Calgary, Alberta, has been arrested for failing to comply with a court order requiring him to apologize to a local librarian. Derek Reimer was taken into custody on March 6, 2024, after refusing to write a letter of apology to Shannon Slater, the manager of the Saddletowne Public Library. The incident stems from his disruption of a drag-queen story time event at the library, where he publicly questioned the appropriateness of the program.

Reimer’s actions during the event led to a conviction for harassment, as he later identified Slater in social media posts. Although he was not jailed immediately following the conviction, the court warned him that non-compliance would result in incarceration. In a statement, he expressed strong opposition to the apology demand, arguing that doing so would imply admission of wrongdoing.

“To be sorry, you have to admit fault,” Reimer stated. “That’s obviously what an apology is.” He explained during a court hearing that he could not produce a letter that contradicted his beliefs. He cited his right to freedom of conscience and religious expression as key factors in his refusal to comply.

Justice Karen Molle presided over the case but left the courtroom during Reimer’s explanation of his position, which he described as an embarrassing moment for the judicial system. He claimed the gallery of supporters erupted in applause as she exited the room.

Reimer raised concerns about potential bias from his probation officer, who he described as pro-LGBTQ, pointing to pride flags displayed at the officer’s office. “I will not apologize based on a fabricated narrative the judge has made up,” he added. He emphasized that Slater never described him as intimidating, stating instead that she felt anxious and upset.

The case has drawn significant public attention, reflecting broader societal debates surrounding free speech and LGBTQ rights in Canada. As legal proceedings continue, Reimer’s situation highlights the tension between individual beliefs and community standards in contemporary discourse.
