West Ham Legend Billy Bonds Passes Away at 79
Billy Bonds, a revered figure in the history of West Ham United, has died at the age of 79. His family confirmed his passing in a statement released by the Premier League club on Sunday, March 16, 2025. According to the club, Bonds “passed away peacefully” that morning.
Legacy of a Football Icon
As the longest-serving player in West Ham’s history, Bonds made an impressive 799 appearances over a career that spanned 21 years. His tenure at the club was marked by significant achievements, including two FA Cup victories. Following his retirement at the age of 41, Bonds took on the role of manager at West Ham from 1990 to 1994.
His family expressed their deep affection for him in their statement, highlighting his love for West Ham United and its supporters. “Dad loved West Ham United and its wonderful supporters with all his heart and treasured every moment of his time at the club. He will always be in our hearts and eternally missed. We take comfort knowing that his legacy will live on forever,” they said.

In a 2018 poll conducted among fans, Bonds was voted the club’s greatest-ever player, underscoring his enduring impact on the team. West Ham United described him as one of the “greatest competitors English football has ever seen.” The club paid tribute, stating, “Rest in peace Billy, our courageous, inspirational, lion-hearted leader.”
Bonds’ contributions to the club and to English football as a whole have left an indelible mark, and his passing is felt deeply by supporters and players alike. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of footballers and fans.
