Discovery FCU’s Successful Coat Drive Supports Addiction Recovery
A recent coat drive organized by Discovery Federal Credit Union aimed to support individuals struggling with addiction by providing essential winter clothing. The initiative, which wrapped up successfully, was designed to benefit clients of the Pennsylvania Adult & Teen Challenge and the Naaman Network, both of which assist individuals in their recovery journey.
Participants in these programs often arrive with few personal belongings, making the provision of warm clothing particularly significant. The coats collected during the drive offer comfort to clients at the Pennsylvania Adult & Teen Challenge as they work toward recovery, as noted by Discovery in a recent announcement.
The credit union’s members and employees contributed generously, resulting in over 50 coats and additional winter gear being donated. Due to the overwhelming response, the drive was extended by a week to accommodate even more contributions.
Michele Smith, president and CEO of Discovery Federal Credit Union, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “As a credit union that prides itself on meeting people where they are, this coat drive offers us the ability to reach out to a community that may be overlooked. It also allows us to make a direct and lasting impact locally while also reaching out to every part of the state.”
The Pennsylvania Adult & Teen Challenge, based in Berks County, has been providing treatment since 1962. The program aims to support both young people and adults battling addiction. Meanwhile, the Naaman Network offers an integrated approach to recovery, providing both residential and outpatient services for those addressing substance use disorders.
Smith expressed gratitude for the community’s engagement, saying, “We are so thankful for the support of our members and the community for stepping up and donating coats.”
Founded in 1959, Discovery Federal Credit Union operates as a member-owned, not-for-profit financial institution headquartered in Spring Township. Recently, the credit union modified its charter to extend its services to underserved individuals in surrounding areas, reflecting a commitment to community support and outreach.
Through initiatives like the coat drive, Discovery FCU not only addresses immediate needs but also fosters a sense of hope and support for those on the challenging path of recovery from addiction.
