Pittsburg Dominates Cardinal Newman to Secure Fifth NCS Title
In a commanding display, the Pittsburg Pirates triumphed over Cardinal Newman with a score of 42-17 in the North Coast Section (NCS) Division I football championship on November 28, 2025. The match, held at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill, California, marked Pittsburg’s fifth consecutive title, solidifying their dominance in the league.
From the outset, Pittsburg set the tone. The Pirates demonstrated their strength, with players showcasing their skills on both offense and defense, leaving Cardinal Newman struggling to respond. The field, littered with visors and mouthpieces, reflected the intensity of the game as Pittsburg executed their game plan flawlessly. After the final whistle, jubilant players drenched head coach Charlie Ramirez in a celebratory bucket of lime Gatorade, capping off a night of relentless effort and accomplishment.
Ramirez, who has led the team for over a decade, expressed pride in his players. “It’s been a long process, but at the end of the day this is what we’ve been preaching for honestly the last 10 plus years,” he stated. The Pirates rebounded effectively after a narrow defeat to De La Salle in the previous week’s NCS Open Division championship, showcasing their resilience and determination.
Quarterback Javale Jones played a pivotal role in the victory, completing 18 of 31 passes for 255 yards, along with three touchdowns and one interception, all in the first half. The team’s offensive strategy was further enhanced by sophomore receiver Kenneth Ward, who made eight catches for a total of 133 yards and two touchdowns.
Despite their effort, Cardinal Newman faced significant challenges. The team was without key players, including starting quarterback Tino Retamoza and defensive lineman King Pitts, both sidelined due to injuries. Running back Malakai Pathoumnourack attempted to play through an ankle injury but was unable to perform at full capacity.
In the early moments of the game, Cardinal Newman took advantage of a scoring opportunity, concluding a 12-play drive with a 20-yard field goal from junior kicker Devon Taylor. However, Pittsburg quickly regained control. Jones connected with wide receiver Ramire Lewis for a 37-yard touchdown, marking the beginning of a dominant offensive performance. By halftime, the Pirates had extended their lead to 24-3.
The second half continued to unfold in favor of Pittsburg. Senior quarterback Carlos Torres took over to lead a nine-play, 80-yard drive, culminating in a 12-yard touchdown pass to King Wade. As the game progressed, Pittsburg’s lead ballooned to an overwhelming 39-point advantage, which activated a running clock in the fourth quarter.
Even with a significant lead, Ramirez opted to rotate his players, allowing younger team members valuable game experience. Cardinal Newman managed to score two late touchdowns, but the effort proved too little, too late.
With this victory, seniors RJ Mosley and Truly Bell, both of whom have committed to play Division I football next season, celebrated their fourth consecutive NCS Division I title. Ramirez reflected on the significance of the team’s legacy, emphasizing the blue-collar spirit of Pittsburg football. “It’s that grit and determination that has defined us for generations,” he said.
As the final seconds ticked away, the Pittsburg Pirates celebrated yet another championship, showcasing their prowess and dedication in a season filled with challenges and triumphs. The victory not only cements their position in local football history but also sets the stage for future aspirations as they aim for a state title.
