In an electrifying moment for Christopher Newport University (CNU), senior running back Gunner White solidified his legacy with a memorable touchdown that helped the Captains secure a spot in the NCAA playoffs. Just three days prior, White faced the grim possibility of an end to his football career due to an injury. His 28-yard touchdown run against Salisbury on November 24, 2023, not only marked his 50th career touchdown but also clinched a thrilling 45-42 victory, sealing CNU’s place in the postseason.

Reflecting on the significance of the moment, White described his 49th touchdown as “by far my favorite touchdown in my life.” He has accumulated a remarkable total of 50 touchdowns throughout his four-year collegiate career, surpassing the previous program record by 12. This achievement underscores his impact on the CNU football program, which has been competing for 25 years.

The drama unfolded during a game against Montclair State on November 1. After a successful 18-yard run to start the second half, White felt a sharp pain in his toe. Initial fears suggested a fracture, leading him to accept that his football career might be over. “I had pretty much accepted that my career was over,” White recalled. “I was ready to start coaching the rest of the year and cheering the guys on.”

Fortunately, after consulting with head athletic trainer Robert Kearn, an X-ray confirmed no fracture. However, an MRI later revealed a torn tendon. With a cortisone shot and careful taping, White’s participation in the upcoming game against Salisbury remained uncertain until just before kickoff.

In a turn of events, White was called to action after a teammate was injured during the game. The Captains were already without another key player, Jordin Lennon, and needed White’s skills on the field. He responded with determination, helping to extend a narrow lead by scoring the decisive touchdown that ultimately secured the win.

CNU’s head coach, Paul Crowley, praised White’s resilience and toughness, stating, “We weren’t even sure he could play against Salisbury, and he ends up scoring the winning touchdown. That’s a testament to his toughness.”

With CNU finishing the regular season undefeated at 10-0, they earned a first-round bye in the Division III playoffs. The Captains are now preparing for their second-round game against Susquehanna at TowneBank Stadium on December 2, 2023.

White’s remarkable statistics further illustrate his influence on the team. He ranks first in CNU history with 302 points, second in all-purpose yards at 3,604, and third in rushing yards with 2,737. The team’s success under his leadership has been significant, with 31 wins in 41 games and two conference championships during his tenure.

Beyond the numbers, White emphasized the importance of his teammates and the relationships built throughout his collegiate career. “Anyone that says they don’t care about leaving an impact would be lying,” he said. “It’s not just the record; I want to leave a legacy behind. This season has been my favorite by far because we’ve won, and it’s been a special team.”

As the Captains prepare for the playoffs, they face challenges ahead, including a potential matchup against the River Hawks, who return to Newport News after an earlier loss to CNU. With a strong season behind them, the Captains are poised to make a deep playoff run, driven by a commitment to teamwork and the pursuit of excellence.
