Upper Darby firefighters made a significant impact this Thanksgiving by delivering more than 40 food boxes to families in need. On Saturday, November 25, 2023, members of the Upper Darby Fire Department gathered at the Cardington fire station to prepare and distribute these meals.

The initiative was spearheaded by retired Chief Ed Cubler, a lifelong fireman and Upper Darby native. For decades, Cubler has organized Thanksgiving food baskets, demonstrating a longstanding commitment to supporting the community during the holiday season.

Community Collaboration for a Common Cause

Firefighters from the Upper Darby Fire Department, represented by IAFF Local 2493, collaborated with their families to assemble the food boxes. Each box contained full meals along with additional items, ensuring that families could enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving feast.

According to Joshua Laubach, the shop steward for IAFF Local 2493, the event showcased the dedication and teamwork of the firefighters. Laubach noted that members, along with the new Fire Chief Nick Martin, quickly mobilized to deliver the boxes, demonstrating their commitment to those in need.

The event not only provided essential meals but also fostered a sense of community spirit among the firefighters and local residents. The firefighters’ efforts highlight the importance of giving back, especially during a time when many families face financial challenges.

Continuing a Cherished Tradition

This initiative is part of a cherished tradition within the Upper Darby Fire Department. Each year, the department strives to ensure that those less fortunate can partake in the warmth and joy of a holiday meal. The distribution of Thanksgiving food boxes serves as a reminder of the critical role that community service plays in strengthening bonds among residents.

As the holiday season continues, the Upper Darby Fire Department remains committed to supporting local families. Their actions exemplify the values of service and compassion, reinforcing the importance of community solidarity during challenging times.
