Richard Branson Honors Late Wife Joan Templeman in Heartfelt Tribute

Richard Branson has paid tribute to his late wife, Joan Templeman, describing her as the “shining star” of their family. The 73-year-old British entrepreneur announced her passing at the age of 80 through heartfelt posts on Instagram, expressing his devastation over the loss. He wrote, “Heartbroken to share that Joan, my wife and partner for 50 years, has passed away.”

Branson recalled Templeman’s role as a loving mother and grandmother, emphasizing her kindness and nurturing spirit. “She was my best friend, my rock, my guiding light, my world. Love you forever, Joan,” he added. The couple married on Necker Island in 1989 and shared three children: Holly, Sam, and Clare Sarah, who tragically passed away shortly after birth. They also have five grandchildren.

In a second post, Branson reflected on Templeman’s enduring smile and joyful presence. He stated, “Life will never be the same without her. But we have fifty incredible years of memories – years filled with tears and laughter, kindness, and a love that shaped our family more than words could ever capture.”

Their relationship began in 1976 at the Manor, the live-in recording studio for Virgin Records. Branson described his instant attraction to Templeman, noting that she was a “down-to-earth Scottish lady” who was not easily impressed by his usual antics. He acknowledged her significant influence on his life decisions, particularly the purchase of Necker Island, which he called “one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.”

Although the cause of Joan Templeman’s death has not been publicly disclosed, Branson confirmed he was by her side when she passed “quickly and painlessly.” He concluded his tribute by stating, “Joan’s light is not gone. It’s just taken on a new shape. It will guide us forward. And we will carry her with us, always.”

Branson is widely recognized as one of Britain’s most successful entrepreneurs, having founded the Virgin Group in the early 1970s. He initially launched Virgin Records, later expanding into various industries including air travel, hospitality, and space tourism. In 1992, he sold Virgin Records to Thorn EMI for £560 million (approximately $804 million), and maintained ownership of Virgin Megastores until 2007.

The Virgin Group returned to the music industry in 1996 with the launch of the indie label V2 Records. Over the years, the group has undergone numerous changes, including the sale of portions of V2 to Morgan Stanley in 2002 and its eventual acquisition by Universal Music Group in 2006.
