The historic Vogue Theater in San Francisco is set to relight its iconic neon marquee on December 3, 2023, in a ceremony officiated by Mayor Daniel Lurie. The event will take place at 3290 Sacramento Street at 19:00, as announced in a social media post from the theater.

Following the ribbon-cutting and the ceremonial switch-on of the restored neon sign, attendees will be treated to a free screening of the classic film “SAN FRANCISCO,” originally released in 1936. This screening not only celebrates the theater’s rich history but also marks the rejuvenation of a significant cultural landmark.

Restoration Funded by Generous Grant

The restoration project, which aims to restore the marquee to its original 1940s glory, was made possible by a generous grant from the Miner/Anderson Family Foundation, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The revitalization effort was led by Jim Rizzo and his team at Neon Works, who dedicated five months to refurbishing the sign. Their work included replacing transformers and revitalizing neon tubing while salvaging components from the original setup.

Representatives of CinemaSFBay emphasized the importance of maintaining the original color scheme: “Maintain the tone and feel of the original color scheme,” they stated, highlighting the project’s commitment to preserving the essence of the theater’s legacy.

A Community Landmark Reimagined

The reopening of the marquee is more than a cosmetic enhancement; it signifies a celebration of community spirit and cultural heritage. Adam Bergeron, a member of the operations team at the Vogue, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “This is a thrilling milestone for us and the Vogue.” He underscored the theater’s historical significance, noting its establishment in 1912 and its designation as the Vogue in 1939.

The Vogue Theater has long been a cultural hub for both cinephiles and local residents, serving as a gathering place that fosters a sense of belonging. As the neon lights flicker back to life, they will not only illuminate Sacramento Street but also rekindle the collective memories of a community that has cherished this landmark for generations.

In a city known for its vibrant arts scene, the relighting of the Vogue’s marquee represents a heartfelt commitment to preserving the past while embracing the future. As the theater prepares for this momentous occasion, it invites the community to join in the celebration of a beloved piece of San Francisco’s history.
