The latest digital supplement for Dungeons & Dragons, titled Lorwyn: First Light, was released on November 18, 2023. This 32-page module introduces players to the enchanting settings of Lorwyn and its darker counterpart, Shadowmoor. Available exclusively on D&D Beyond, it offers tools for both Dungeon Masters and players to explore these unique realms inspired by the popular Magic: The Gathering plane, which first appeared in 2007.

Set against the backdrop of a whimsical world of eternal daylight, Lorwyn features vibrant landscapes filled with lively creatures such as giants, faeries, and various humanoid species. In stark contrast, Shadowmoor exists in perpetual night, marked by ominous forests and treacherous bogs. The module is part of the Forgotten Realms Ultimate Bundle but stands out as a distinct setting that does not directly connect to the traditional D&D lore, raising questions about its inclusion.

According to a blog post from Wizards of the Coast, players can stumble upon a portal during adventures in the Moonshae Isles, leading them into the light-filled realm of Lorwyn. The creators describe Lorwyn as a place with “colorful creeks, bright meadows, verdant forests, and gentle hills,” where inhabitants live in idyllic villages. Shadowmoor, conversely, presents a darker experience, where the environment is filled with skeletal trees and haunting landscapes.

Despite its intriguing lore, the module has faced criticism for its lack of original content. While it includes two backgrounds, two feats, and a selection of monsters, much of the material appears to be reskinned from existing resources rather than presenting unique gameplay options. For instance, a mystical creature known as Eirdu is suggested to be represented using the stat block of an Ancient Gold Dragon, without providing original artwork or detailed descriptions.

The approach to species and character options has also raised eyebrows. The module advises players to utilize existing Goblin species traits for Boggarts, which exist in both realms, instead of creating new entries for the distinct cultures and appearances found in Lorwyn and Shadowmoor. This is particularly surprising given the increasing flexibility in species selection introduced in the D&D 2024 rules.

Despite these shortcomings, Lorwyn: First Light does present some compelling roleplaying opportunities. Shadowmoor is infused with Wild Magic, resulting in unpredictable spellcasting that could lead to fascinating outcomes. The potential for character transformation when crossing the border between Lorwyn and Shadowmoor adds a layer of depth to gameplay, allowing for varied narrative possibilities.

The module also features a Gazetteer section, detailing various locations across both realms with plot hooks designed to inspire adventures. However, the absence of maps for these locations might leave Dungeon Masters seeking additional resources to fully engage their players.

Two sample adventures included, titled “The Inventor’s Sabotage” and “Blood at the Banquet,” provide frameworks for gameplay, but they lack accompanying maps or visual aids. Priced at $14.99, the cost of the module has prompted discussions about its value compared to more comprehensive sourcebooks available on the market.

In summary, while Lorwyn: First Light introduces a fascinating new setting that expands the Dungeons & Dragons universe, it leaves players wanting more in terms of originality and depth. The potential for future expansions or a more detailed sourcebook remains a possibility that many fans hope for.
