Trump Hints at Ukraine Peace Progress, Urges Caution on Expectations
President Donald Trump suggested on Monday that there might be positive developments regarding a peace deal for Ukraine, as the deadline approaches later this week. He cautioned, however, that observers should remain skeptical until concrete results are seen. Trump made these remarks following discussions between Ukrainian and American negotiators held in Geneva, Switzerland, where a new “refined peace framework” was proposed to Russia.
The proposed 28-point plan has raised concerns among European allies, who fear it could lead to Ukraine’s full capitulation to Russian demands. Trump expressed hope for substantial progress in the peace talks, stating, “Is it really possible that big progress is being made in Peace Talks between Russia and Ukraine? Don’t believe it until you see it, but something good just may be happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!”
The Trump administration has indicated that Ukraine must accept the terms of the proposed deal or risk losing critical military and intelligence support from the United States. Trump has set Thanksgiving Day as the deadline for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to agree to the terms.
A U.S. official previously noted, “It was strongly implied to the Ukrainians that the United States expects them to agree to a peace deal.” Meanwhile, Zelenskyy, addressing European allies at a conference in Sweden, stated that Ukraine continues to seek compromises that would enhance its position without compromising its sovereignty.
In a video statement released on Friday, Zelenskyy remarked that the U.S. has placed Ukraine in a challenging position, where it risks either losing its dignity or jeopardizing a key partnership.
Russia has yet to respond to the proposal discussed in Geneva, leaving uncertainty about whether the terms will be accepted. Many provisions within the plan have already sparked debate, with the U.S. State Department denying reports that Secretary of State Marco Rubio informed Congress that the leaked 28-point plan was not the administration’s stance but a document from Russia.
The White House has referred to official statements from both Ukraine and the U.S. in light of the ongoing discussions. The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not provided immediate comment regarding the latest developments.
As negotiations continue, the international community will be watching closely to see whether a viable peace agreement can be reached that satisfies all parties involved.
