A football player from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is in police custody following an incident that left two teammates injured. The assault occurred on the morning of October 14, 2023, at the Football Operations Center, just hours before the Blazers were scheduled to face the University of South Florida.
According to the UAB Police Department, the incident involved a stabbing. Two players sustained injuries and were subsequently transported to a local hospital. Birmingham Fire and Rescue confirmed that both victims are now in stable condition. In a statement, UAB expressed gratitude that the players are recovering and extended thoughts to their families during this challenging time.
The third individual involved in the incident, identified as Daniel Mincey, was taken into custody by UAB Campus Police. The university has not released further details about the players involved, citing the ongoing investigation.
Despite the serious nature of the incident, UAB decided to proceed with the scheduled game against South Florida, which kicked off at 14:00 local time at the Protective Stadium. The university emphasized its commitment to the safety and well-being of its students. A spokesperson stated, “Given patient privacy and the ongoing investigation, we have no further comment at this time.”
As the investigation unfolds, UAB authorities are expected to provide more information. The football community and fans are left to reflect on the implications of this troubling incident as they await updates on the players’ recovery and the legal proceedings against Mincey.
