Griffons Soccer Exits NCAA Tournament After Loss to Washburn
The Missouri Western soccer team’s journey in the NCAA Division II Tournament ended in the first round on March 15, 2024, with a 2-0 defeat against the Washburn Ichabods in Mankato, Minnesota. The No. 5 seed Griffons, finishing the season with a record of 12 wins, 2 losses, and 7 draws, were unable to capitalize on their chances to advance.
Washburn, seeded fourth, struck first in the 32nd minute. Freshman forward Kate Hinck found the back of the net with an assist from teammates Leah Henke and Grace Peterson, giving the Ichabods a 1-0 lead. The Griffons managed to hold off further scoring until the second half, but Washburn extended their lead in the 64th minute when Henke scored from a setup by sophomore Sam Searcey.
Despite their efforts, the Griffons struggled to find the scoreline they needed. They registered multiple shots on goal throughout the match, with significant attempts from players including Rosemary Pujado, Kendall Knisley, and Rachyl Benavides. However, none converted, leading to the final score of 2-0.
This loss concludes a successful season for the Griffons, who made their second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Just last week, they celebrated their first MIAA Tournament Championship after defeating Central Oklahoma, marking a significant achievement in their program’s history.
As the team reflects on their season, it is clear that their performance has set a strong foundation for future endeavors. The Griffons will look to build on this experience as they prepare for the next season, with hopes of returning to the NCAA Tournament and advancing further.
