Joe Flacco Discusses Pressure of Joe Burrow’s Potential Return
Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has returned to full practice for the first time since undergoing surgery for a toe injury suffered in Week 2 of the NFL season. His progress raises questions about the immediate future of veteran quarterback Joe Flacco, who is set to lead the 3-7 Bengals in their upcoming game against the New England Patriots (9-2) this Sunday.
In a conversation with ESPN’s Ben Baby on Wednesday, Flacco shared his thoughts on the potential challenge posed by Burrow’s return. Although he acknowledged that Burrow’s comeback is on his mind, Flacco emphasized his focus on preparation and maintaining a strong mindset. “It’s in your head a little bit to a certain extent,” Flacco stated. “But I really am not that concerned with it. I think as long as I just keep my head down and keep preparing the way I am, then that’ll be the best for me.”
Flacco joined the Bengals on October 7, 2023, when he was traded from the Cleveland Browns. He made an immediate impact, leading Cincinnati to a victory against the Pittsburgh Steelers in his second start. However, Flacco’s tenure has been marred by three consecutive losses, leaving him with a record of 1-4 as the starting quarterback.
Reports earlier in the week indicated that Burrow would not return to action until at least the Bengals’ Thanksgiving night matchup against the Baltimore Ravens. As it stands, Flacco may find himself in the role of Burrow’s primary backup as early as this weekend.
Despite being on the brink of turning 41 in January, Flacco remains motivated to continue his career. ESPN statistics show him ranked 22nd in the NFL among qualified players with a 46.6 adjusted QBR for the season. Throughout his first five games with the Bengals, he has recorded 12 touchdown passes against three interceptions. “Hopefully it reinforces it in somebody’s mind that I can do it,” Flacco said. “I still feel like I can do it. This obviously does help with the confidence of being able to do it and all that stuff. I would like an opportunity, but you just never know.”
As of Thursday morning, the Bengals were designated as seven-point underdogs in their home game against the formidable Patriots, setting the stage for a challenging matchup. Flacco’s performance will be crucial in determining the team’s direction amidst Burrow’s impending return.
