Mandatory Therapy for Athletes Following Marshawn Kneeland’s Tragic Death
The recent suicide of Marshawn Kneeland, a defensive end for the Dallas Cowboys, has prompted urgent calls for mandatory mental health therapy for athletes across various sports organizations. Kneeland, who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after an encounter with law enforcement, had reportedly struggled with mental health issues and was grieving the passing of his mother in 2024. This tragedy highlights the pressing need for structured mental health support within the athletic community.
Across sports leagues such as the NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL, as well as collegiate athletics, the expectation for athletes to perform at peak levels often overlooks their mental health. Experts argue that therapy should be as integral to an athlete’s regimen as physical training. Regular sessions with licensed mental health professionals could potentially reduce the risk of crises like Kneeland’s, who, according to police dispatcher audio, had a documented history of mental illness.
Statistics indicate a troubling trend. While elite athletes generally exhibit lower rates of suicidal thoughts compared to the general population, reports show that among college athletes, these rates have doubled between 2002 and 2022. Moreover, suicide rates for young adults, particularly those in Generation Z (ages 18-28), are escalating, with significant disparities affecting Black and Hispanic men.
The NCAA took a significant step last year by mandating annual mental health screenings for student-athletes. This initiative is crucial for identifying individuals in crisis, yet it is insufficient to merely provide resources and services. Many athletes face stigma associated with mental health struggles, which can deter them from seeking help.
As a mental health researcher and clinician, I often observe the societal pressures that discourage male athletes from acknowledging their vulnerabilities. Phrases like “man up” or “play through injury” can create barriers to seeking assistance. Conversations with professional athletes reveal the internal conflicts they face when considering therapy—often feeling that it contradicts their self-image as strong competitors.
In a world where athletes are scrutinized both on and off the field, the pressure to maintain an image of perfection can lead to emotional strain. Social media amplifies this scrutiny, demanding that athletes remain flawless and always ready for competition. Implementing mandatory therapy could provide a crucial reprieve, allowing athletes to address their mental health without fear of judgment.
Some may question the necessity of therapy for well-compensated athletes. Yet, mental health support is not only life-saving; it can also enhance performance. Simone Biles, for example, has attributed her success and well-being to weekly therapy sessions, which helped her navigate challenges such as the “twisties” during the Olympics.
The professional athlete I mentioned earlier has emerged as an advocate for mental health awareness after overcoming his own struggles. If therapy were a standard requirement for all athletes, perhaps we could witness more positive narratives of healing and resilience, reducing the risk of tragedies like that of Marshawn Kneeland.
In conclusion, the athletic community must recognize the importance of mental health and take proactive measures. Mandatory therapy could not only foster individual healing but also cultivate a culture of support that benefits everyone involved. As we reflect on the loss of Kneeland, it is imperative to advocate for systemic changes that prioritize the well-being of athletes.
