New Money Explores Wealth’s Impact at Tallinn Film Festival

The film “New Money,” directed by Estonian filmmaker Rain Rannu, made its international debut at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival on November 14, 2023. This lively comedy-drama, which follows Rannu’s earlier work “Free Money,” explores a provocative question: What would you do with €50 million, approximately $58 million? The film’s premiere in the Baltic Competition attracted a full audience, eliciting laughter and engagement throughout.

Reprising their roles from “Free Money,” actors Märt Pius and Steffi Pähn portray the central couple, Taavi and Liisa. The film is produced by Rannu and Tõnu Hiielaid under their production company, Tallifornia, with sales managed by Baltic Crime.

The narrative of “New Money” centers on the challenges that arise when Taavi and Liisa, a humble teacher and a modest IT expert, become overnight millionaires through Bitcoin. Rannu shared insights about the film’s development, emphasizing that it is not a direct sequel to “Free Money.” He expressed his fondness for the characters and the organic process that led to their return. “I really liked those two characters, and I thought that maybe it would be great to spend some more time with them,” he explained. The actors’ enthusiasm for the project facilitated its progression, resulting in a collaborative effort that resonated throughout the production.

In discussing the editing process, Rannu stated, “I really enjoy the process, because in editing, you can make it or break it.” He highlighted the significance of focusing on micro nuances, which play a crucial role in shaping the final product. Looking ahead, Rannu hinted at the possibility of a third film set in the same universe, noting that several compelling ideas are already under consideration.
