Community Partners Distribute 250 Coats to Anchorage Students

A collaborative effort among local organizations has brought warmth to students at Airport Heights Elementary School in Anchorage, Alaska, with the distribution of 250 coats and hand-knit hats. This initiative aims to ensure that every child in the community can endure the chilly winter months comfortably.

Dylan Faber, a dedicated volunteer involved in the coat drive, emphasized the significance of this community effort. “It’s really important to us as community partners and members to make sure that no kid in Anchorage is cold,” he stated. The coat drive was supported by various partners, including the Anchorage Fire Department, Matson, Span Alaska, and Nuvision.

Earlier in the week, coats were donated to Northwood Elementary School before the focus shifted to Airport Heights. Volunteers, including Faber, helped students choose coats that not only fit but also allow for some growth. “Make sure they’ve got a little bit of growing room, and then they get to pick their color,” he explained, highlighting the personal touch of the initiative.

The impact of this coat distribution extends beyond mere warmth. For students like Jillianna Geiber, the journey to school can be challenging, especially during the darker winter months. Geiber shared her experience, stating, “It’s really hard to see. When it’s snowy, I can, sometimes I almost fall, and I catch myself.” Despite these challenges, she expressed enthusiasm for the snow, noting its potential for creative play.

The community partners involved in this project hope to continue expanding the coat drive in future years, aiming to provide warmth to even more children across Alaska. Faber remarked on the joy of seeing children proudly wearing their new coats, adding, “It’s just really a great feeling when you see their faces light up when they realize they get to pick their coat, take it home, get their name on it and use it all winter long and hopefully the next winter too if it’s big enough.”

This initiative not only highlights the importance of community involvement but also serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to ensure that no child in Anchorage has to face the cold unprepared.
