Plowshares Community Dining Center Marks 40 Years of Service

The Plowshares Community Dining Center in Ukiah, California, celebrates over 40 years of commitment to fighting hunger and poverty. Founded on November 14, 1983, by Sister Jane Kelly, the centre has evolved from a small initiative feeding the community from a station wagon into a vital non-profit organization. Its mission remains clear: to ensure that no one in the community goes hungry.

With a volunteer force exceeding 100 individuals and a small staff of six, Plowshares now serves an impressive 102,250 meals annually, nearly double the amount offered seven years ago. Executive Director Michelle Shaw highlights the significant increase in demand, particularly following recent changes to SNAP benefits. “Since the announcement of issues with SNAP on October 22, we’ve seen a 25% increase in guests visiting our dining room,” Shaw states, noting that this surge happened almost overnight.

Each weekday, Plowshares provides free hot lunches without any questions asked. Volunteers prepare and serve meals, while others deliver food through the “Meals on Wheels” program, which currently assists 220 home-bound seniors. This vital service not only delivers food but also offers essential human interaction, often serving as the only contact some seniors have during the week.

The organization is particularly active during the holiday season, with its annual Thanksgiving Feast being a highlight. This year will mark the 42nd Thanksgiving celebration, where the community gathers to share in a meal and support the cause. As part of its outreach, Plowshares sends out a “Winter Appeal” newsletter to local residents, encouraging food donations and financial support.

Shaw reflects on the increasing food insecurity she has witnessed throughout her tenure. “The number of meals served has risen from 60,000 to 102,250,” she reiterates, emphasizing the growing need for assistance in the community. Local churches have stepped in to help fill the gaps, providing meals on weekends to ensure that the service is available every day of the year.

Sister Jane Kelly, the centre’s founder, remains a pivotal figure in its history. Known for her unwavering advocacy for the marginalized, she inspired many through her dedication. “She was a force of nature,” says Warren Sawyers, a long-time supporter. “Her dream has come to fruition, and we owe it to her belief in this cause.”

The Meals on Wheels program, initiated by long-time administrator Ronda de los Santos, is among the organization’s most successful initiatives. Shaw credits de los Santos for her vision and commitment, which have made a lasting impact on the lives of many seniors.

Plowshares also addresses broader community needs by partnering with local organizations like the Boys and Girls Club of Ukiah, providing meals for children when schools are closed. The centre acts as a hub for information on various social services, offering support for healthcare, housing, and personal care items.

Food for daily meals is primarily sourced through generous donations from local businesses, including Raleys, Safeway, and Costco. Shaw notes that the organization is formalizing a relationship with Ukiah Grocery Outlet to enhance its food supply further.

As the community gears up for Thanksgiving, Plowshares is appealing for donations to support its initiatives. Shaw urges community members to consider making a contribution, stating, “This year, we hope people will donate to Plowshares and make room at your table for one more.”

With a significant portion of the organization’s operating budget derived from community donations, support is crucial. Shaw emphasizes that Plowshares will continue to adapt to the community’s needs, reassuring guests about the centre’s ongoing presence.
