UK Deploys Military Support to Belgium Amid Rising Drone Threats

The United Kingdom is responding to a series of drone sightings near Belgian airports by sending military experts and equipment to assist local authorities. This decision follows recent incidents that led to temporary closures of both Brussels Airport and Liege Airport, one of Europe’s largest cargo hubs.

Military Support Deployed

On Sunday, Air Chief Marshal Richard Knighton, the head of the U.K. armed forces, confirmed that military personnel and equipment would be deployed to Belgium at the request of Belgian officials. Knighton stated, “We don’t know — and the Belgians don’t yet know — the source of those drones, but we will help them by providing our kit and capability, which has already started to deploy to help Belgium.” The urgency of the deployment reflects concerns over drone incursions near sensitive sites, including a military base that houses U.S. nuclear weapons.

Drone activity has intensified across Europe in recent months, prompting multiple airport closures. In Belgium, both Brussels and Liege airports experienced disruptions, raising alarms about aviation safety and security.
