Collaboration in Dermatology Takes Center Stage at SDPA 2025
At the **2025 Fall Conference** of the **Society of Dermatology Physician Associates (SDPA)** in **San Antonio, Texas**, discussions centered on collaboration in dermatology and emerging treatment options. Cynthia Trickett, MPAS, PA-C, who is a prominent session presenter and works at **North Dallas Dermatology Associates**, shared insights with HCPLive about the evolving landscape in dermatology, emphasizing the increasing importance of physician assistants (PAs) and nurse practitioners (NPs) in the field.
Trickett expressed her enthusiasm about the conference, noting that it has provided a platform for meaningful engagement with industry partners. “It’s nice to see the shift in how our industry really wants to partner with us,” she stated. This change reflects a growing recognition of the vital role that PAs and NPs play in dermatology, particularly as their numbers are set to surpass those of dermatologists.
Advancements in Dermatology Education
Trickett highlighted the commitment to educating new PAs entering dermatology through initiatives like the **Emerging Scholars** program. “I’ve been fortunate enough that this is my fourth year doing it,” she remarked. The program aims to enhance knowledge about conditions such as **psoriasis** and **psoriatic disease**. This educational support contrasts sharply with Trickett’s own experience when she began her career in dermatology in **1998**, which relied heavily on self-directed learning.
She noted recent advancements in treatment options, particularly for psoriatic diseases, stating, “We’re getting even better at achieving higher clearance rates in skin and setting new benchmarks.” The introduction of new oral and topical treatments promises faster relief for patients.
Shifting Perspectives on Topical Steroids
A significant topic of discussion at the conference was the diminishing reliance on topical steroids for chronic inflammatory diseases. Trickett pointed out that the long-term use of these steroids often leads to adverse effects, some of which are irreversible. She described new topical therapies as “safer” and “more elegant,” allowing for treatment in sensitive areas of the body that were previously deemed risky for steroid application.
When asked about **topical steroid withdrawal (TSW)**, Trickett acknowledged its reality, particularly concerning large body surface areas. Yet, she emphasized that such cases are not common in her practice. “We need to have a healthy respect; we need to be aware that it can happen,” she said, urging practitioners to consider the multiple sources of steroid exposure that patients may encounter.
Trickett also commended the advent of **topical JAK inhibitors**, which are transforming the treatment landscape for conditions like atopic dermatitis. She noted the importance of “steroid stewardship,” paralleling it with initiatives in pain management and antibiotic use.
In closing, Trickett underscored the necessity for continued education and innovation in dermatology, advocating for treatments that minimize long-term side effects while maximizing efficacy. Her insights reflect a broader trend in the dermatology field towards collaborative practices that enhance patient care and outcomes.
The conversations at the SDPA conference underscore a pivotal moment for dermatology, as professionals come together to redefine the role of PAs and NPs while embracing new treatment paradigms. As advancements continue to emerge, the focus remains on improving patient health and ensuring that every voice in the dermatological community is heard.
