Averi M. Turner Sworn in as New Commissioner for District 2
Averi M. Turner has officially taken the oath of office as the new Commissioner for District 2 of the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board. Her appointment follows the resignation of her predecessor, Becka Thompson, in early October 2023. The board voted unanimously to approve Turner on November 5, 2023, marking a significant step in maintaining leadership continuity within the organization.
Turner will serve the remainder of Thompson’s term, which is set to conclude on January 2, 2026. The selection process involved an open application period from October 10 to October 24, during which multiple candidates were evaluated for the position.
Turner’s Background and Vision
Turner brings a wealth of experience to her new role, highlighted by her diverse background in education and community service. She has previously worked as an educator and an International Baccalaureate (IB) Coordinator, in addition to leading instructional coaching initiatives. Her involvement extends to various state boards and advisory committees, where she has consistently advocated for equity, leadership development, and increased opportunities for youth.
The vision Turner holds for the parks in District 2 reflects her professional passion for creating inclusive spaces.
