Channing Tatum Discusses Bold Roles and Career Highlights in ‘Roofman’
Channing Tatum has opened up about his latest film, ‘Roofman’, in a candid interview that explores his challenging roles and the evolution of his career. In the discussion for Deadline’s ‘The Actor’s Side’ series, Tatum shared insights into playing the infamous criminal Jeffrey Manchester, who famously robbed 45 McDonald’s restaurants and lived undetected in a Toys R Us store for six months before being recaptured.
The actor is currently generating award buzz for his portrayal of Manchester, showcasing his dedication to authentically embodying real-life characters. Tatum reflected on the unique challenges of reenacting the lives of such individuals, a skill he has honed since his early career in critically acclaimed films.
In a standout scene from ‘Roofman’, Tatum humorously described a nude sequence where he runs through Toys R Us after being confronted by Peter Dinklage. He recounted the experience of filming a scene with Sandra Bullock, where he was required to be naked while dealing with leeches. Tatum’s willingness to embrace vulnerability on screen is a testament to his commitment as an actor.
The interview also touched on Tatum’s past as a dancer in Chippendales-style clubs, which laid the groundwork for his roles in multiple films directed by Steven Soderbergh. This unique background has allowed him to explore various facets of performance, including owning strip clubs, an experience he describes as one of his favorites.
As he continues to navigate the complexities of his craft, Tatum discussed the physical challenges of preparing for roles, including gaining and losing weight. He expressed a reluctance to take on leading roles in big musicals, despite his talent for singing and dancing, which was humorously highlighted when he was cast unknowingly as a tap dancer in a Coen Brothers film.
In addition to his current projects, Tatum hinted at a potential return as Gambit in an upcoming film, much to the excitement of his fans. The actor’s ongoing evolution in Hollywood reflects both his versatility and his willingness to take risks in his career.
