Task Surpasses HBO’s Mare of Easttown in Rotten Tomatoes Ratings

Task, a crime drama series that recently concluded its run, has achieved a significant milestone on Rotten Tomatoes, surpassing the ratings of the critically acclaimed Mare of Easttown. The finale, which aired on October 19, 2025, has garnered a “Certified Fresh” score of 96% from critics, eclipsing Mare of Easttown‘s impressive 95% score and establishing Task as writer-creator Brad Ingelsby‘s highest-rated show to date.
Set in the working-class suburbs of Philadelphia, Task follows an FBI agent who leads a task force to thwart a series of violent robberies orchestrated by a seemingly ordinary family man. The series showcases engaging performances, particularly from stars Mark Ruffalo and Emilia Jones, who have received acclaim for their roles.
Rise in Ratings Signals Success
Initially, Task had a slower start with critics, debuting with a score of just 71% prior to its premiere on September 7. This rating led some to speculate that the series might not live up to the high standards set by Mare of Easttown, which won three Emmy Awards in acting categories for its cast, including Kate Winslet.
However, as the series progressed, audience and critical acclaim surged, particularly following the release of its fourth episode. By September 30, Task had matched Mare of Easttown with a rating of 95%, demonstrating the effectiveness of its slow-burn narrative structure. Over the four weeks since its debut, Task experienced a remarkable 24-point increase in its Rotten Tomatoes rating.
Future Awards Prospects and Audience Reception
Despite its critical success, Task has seen a lower audience rating, currently at 73%, compared to Mare of Easttown‘s 94%. This discrepancy highlights the difference between critical and public reception, but the critics’ approval bodes well for the series’ prospects in upcoming awards seasons.
As the buzz around Task continues to grow, it is emerging as a strong contender for the 2026 Emmy Awards. Cast members such as Mark Ruffalo, Tom Pelphrey, Emilia Jones, and Fabien Frankel are generating interest for potential nominations in acting categories, while nominations for writing, directing, and overall drama series seem highly probable.
In summary, Task has successfully positioned itself not only as a standout series on HBO Max but also as a formidable competitor to one of HBO’s best crime miniseries in recent years. The series’ high ratings and critical acclaim suggest it will remain a topic of conversation as awards season approaches.
