San Antonio Unveils Municipal Archives Museum Showcasing 300 Years of History
The City of San Antonio has officially inaugurated the new Municipal Archives Museum, which presents over three centuries of the city’s governmental history. Located at 719 South Santa Rosa Avenue, the museum is housed within the Municipal Archives & Records Center.
Visitors can explore preserved city documents, photographs, artifacts, and multimedia displays that illustrate the evolution of San Antonio’s municipal government. City Clerk Debbie Racca-Sittre emphasized the significance of the facility, stating, “The Municipal Archives Museum is more than a collection of historical records. It is a vibrant space where the community can connect with the legacy of civic service, government transparency, and the growth of our great city.”
Exhibit Highlights and Historical Significance
Among the treasures featured in the museum’s inaugural exhibit are a hand-carved City Seal created in 1925 by woodcarver Johannes C. Scholze, as well as the San Fernando de Béxar City Council minutes dating back to1818. A notable item is an 1849 survey map of land owned by Samuel A. Maverick in downtown San Antonio, which includes the historic Alamo.
Additionally, the museum showcases the lyrics and album of the city song, “San Antonio, Ciudad de Encantos.” These artifacts not only highlight the rich history of local governance but also serve as a testament to the cultural heritage of the area.
Visiting the Museum
The Municipal Archives Museum is free to the public but is open by appointment only on weekdays. Those interested in visiting can request an appointment or find more information on the city’s official website. This initiative aims to foster community engagement and educate residents about San Antonio’s extensive and storied past.
With its opening, the Municipal Archives Museum stands as a significant cultural landmark in San Antonio, inviting residents and visitors alike to discover the legacy of their city’s governance and civic life.
