Boro Park Center in Brooklyn, New York, has made history by becoming the first facility in the state to receive the Skilled Nursing Facility Stroke Rehabilitation Certification from the American Heart Association (AHA). This certification, announced on October 29, 2025, aligns with World Stroke Day, emphasizing the importance of stroke rehabilitation and care for survivors.

The AHA certification signifies that Boro Park Center has met rigorous standards for stroke rehabilitation, ensuring comprehensive care from pre-admission through to discharge. This achievement highlights the facility’s commitment to delivering exceptional care to its residents, particularly those recovering from stroke.

Kenny Rozenberg, CEO of Centers Health Care, expressed pride in the recognition. He stated, “This honor reflects the dedication and compassion of our entire team…to provide exceptional care to every resident.” Rozenberg emphasized the facility’s focus on high-quality, evidence-based care, reinforcing its commitment to improving outcomes for patients.

According to the AHA’s 2024 statistical update, stroke is a leading cause of serious long-term disability in the United States, with approximately 795,000 people experiencing a new or recurrent stroke each year. The certification framework evaluates facilities based on science-based requirements, including program management, patient education, care coordination, and clinical management.

Dr. Pamela Duncan, volunteer chair of the AHA’s Skilled Nursing Facility Stroke Rehabilitation Certification Oversight Workgroup, noted the importance of evidence-based processes in patient care. “When there are evidence-based processes during every phase of care, patients have the best opportunity for positive outcomes,” she stated. This certification not only benefits patients but also standardizes care practices across facilities.

To qualify for this certification, skilled nursing facilities or swing beds in critical access hospitals must implement a stroke rehabilitation program that follows current evidence-based guidelines. This structured approach enables facilities to provide the best possible care for stroke patients while supporting their recovery journey.

Boro Park Center’s achievement underscores its dedication to innovative rehabilitation methods and patient-centered care. The facility aims to ensure that every community member feels at home and supported during their recovery.
