Drew Barrymore Reflects on Rehab Experience as Life-Changing
Drew Barrymore has described her time in rehabilitation at the age of 14 as “the best thing that ever happened to me.” During a candid conversation on the October 24, 2023, episode of *The Drew Barrymore Show*, she discussed her journey to recovery, the feelings of shame she faced, and her role in the film *Wayward*, which explores life in a school for troubled youth.
In a heartfelt exchange with Mae Martin, Barrymore recounted her experience of being taken away and placed in a rehab facility for two years. She emphasized the importance of seeking help, stating, “I did not know that. I mean, I know that you were a wayward teen — as was I, and I was in rehab and stuff — but I didn’t know that you were at one of those places.”
Martin, who identifies as nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns, expressed surprise at discovering Barrymore’s past. They acknowledged the film *Wayward* draws inspiration from their childhood friend, Nicole, who lived in a similar program. Barrymore praised Martin’s portrayal of such an institution, noting its authenticity.
“I didn’t know that about you, but watching the show there was way too much accuracy,” Barrymore said, reflecting on the emotional resonance of the series. Martin added that their own experiences have fostered a protective feeling towards young people who face similar challenges. “Now, as an adult, I feel so protective of young people and having had that experience of being pathologized at a very young age,” they shared.
Despite the serious subject matter, both Barrymore and Martin agreed that *Wayward* does not present a heavy or depressing viewing experience. Barrymore also noted a personal turning point when she turned 40, describing it as a difficult moment but one that has ultimately led to significant improvement in her life.
“We pull ourselves up, hopefully, and we find people that encourage us to tell the truth,” she said. “That is shame. And when you live with shame, it is crippling.” Barrymore elaborated on her time in rehab, explaining that, contrary to what some might expect, she found a sense of “lightness” during her stay. “I know that sounds wild, but it was encouragement to say your truths, to be brave, to find humor and heroism in your journey,” she explained.
Reflecting on her childhood, Barrymore has previously shared insights about her upbringing. In a February 2023 interview with *Us*, she described her early environment as “not as safe as it should have been,” yet she added that her unconventional childhood shaped her resilience. “The whole concept of ‘no’ made me really rebellious,” she recalled. “It turns out ‘no’ is essential and has incredible benefits.”

Barrymore’s openness about her past continues to resonate with audiences, providing a powerful narrative on recovery and personal growth. As she navigates her career, her experiences serve as a testament to the transformative power of seeking help and embracing one’s truth.
