Caribou Vikings Stun John Bapst with Owen Corrigan’s Hat Trick

The Caribou Vikings pulled off a stunning victory against the previously unbeaten John Bapst Crusaders, winning 4-3 in overtime on October 17, 2023. Star player Owen Corrigan delivered an impressive performance, scoring three goals, including the decisive golden goal that sealed the match.
The game took place on the Vikings’ home turf, where the stakes were high. Before this match, the Crusaders had only conceded three goals throughout the entire season, while the Vikings boasted an average of over five goals per game. The tension was palpable as both teams prepared for what would become a thrilling contest.
Caribou wasted no time taking the lead. Just two minutes into the game, Declan Miller scored the opener after receiving a lead pass from Corrigan. The early goal energized the Vikings and set the tone for a competitive match.
The Crusaders answered back ten minutes later with a goal from Kasper Hansen, who found the net after a well-coordinated attack. They took the lead shortly thereafter when Rafa Rentosa scored from a crossing pass by Josh Pangburn in the 31st minute.
As the first half neared its end, Caribou leveled the score again. Corrigan was awarded a penalty kick and converted it successfully, bringing the score to 2-2 before halftime.
Early in the second half, the Crusaders regained their advantage with a goal from Cooper Lewis, who capitalized on a precise entry pass by Gavin Rogers. The Crusaders controlled the game for much of the second half, keeping the Vikings on the defensive.
With less than a minute remaining in regulation, Caribou launched a desperate attempt to equalize. A long throw-in from Carsen Richards created chaos in the box, allowing Corrigan to pounce on a loose ball and score with just 42 seconds left on the clock, pushing the game into overtime.
In the first overtime period, the Vikings struck again. Max Morrow provided a crucial assist to Corrigan, who completed his hat trick with the golden goal, leading Caribou to a remarkable victory. The win concluded the Vikings’ regular season with a record of 10-3-1, while the Crusaders suffered their first loss, falling to 9-1-2.
In the girls’ game that preceded the boys’ match, the John Bapst Crusaders dominated, defeating the Caribou Vikings 5-0. Ella Williams starred with three goals, and Quinn Bennett added two more. The win improved the Crusaders’ record to 8-4, while the Vikings ended their season without a victory at 0-14.
This match showcased the competitive spirit of high school soccer, with both teams displaying skill and determination. The Caribou Vikings will look to build on this momentum as they move forward, while the John Bapst Crusaders will regroup after their first loss of the season.
