HR Executive Defends Attendance at Controversial Conference

Human resources executive Dave Greenwood plans to attend an upcoming conference organized by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), featuring controversial speaker Robby Starbuck. Starbuck, known for his criticism of corporate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, has sparked significant backlash, prompting some HR professionals to reconsider their association with SHRM. Greenwood, who has been in the HR field for nearly 17 years, expressed his commitment to understanding a broad spectrum of perspectives, even those that may be uncomfortable.

In an interview, Greenwood, who identifies as gay and has been a SHRM member for approximately four years, articulated why he believes exposure to diverse viewpoints is essential for HR leaders. He emphasized the importance of recognizing various factors that contribute to a productive workplace, including differing political beliefs and personal backgrounds. “I completely disagree with Robby Starbuck’s views,” Greenwood stated, highlighting the tension between personal beliefs and professional responsibilities.

Greenwood noted that SHRM has historically hosted speakers from across the political spectrum, including former Presidents Joe Biden, George Bush Sr., and Bill Clinton. He believes this practice is beneficial for HR professionals who must navigate complex workplace dynamics. “It’s important to have that full perspective, particularly as an HR professional, because you’re dealing with so much,” he said.

The conference panel featuring Starbuck will also include lawyer and media personality Van Jones, moderated by SHRM’s CEO, Johnny C. Taylor. Greenwood pointed out that both Jones and Taylor are people of color, which adds a significant dimension to the discussion. “Starbuck’s views, even though I find them abhorrent, resonate with a certain populist demographic,” he explained. “It’s crucial not to silence voices, even when you disagree with them.”

Greenwood acknowledged the potential for discomfort in discussions surrounding Starbuck’s opinions. Yet, he believes it is essential for HR professionals to be prepared for disagreements that may arise within their workplaces. He remarked, “Hearing Taylor, Starbuck, and Jones could provide valuable perspectives that can be brought back to your place of employment.”

While Greenwood understands the anger some feel towards Starbuck’s past comments, he encourages a broader view of the situation. “I am a gay man, and I know the things that Starbuck has said are almost damaging to some of the members of my community,” he stated. “However, not everyone in the world is gay, and not everyone shares my beliefs. As an HR professional, I must consider that.”

Greenwood believes that relying solely on personal beliefs to guide decisions can be detrimental in the workplace. He stressed the need for HR professionals to engage with a variety of perspectives to foster an inclusive environment. “It’s critical to hear these perspectives, have different types of temperament, and work with different voices,” he concluded.

As the SHRM conference approaches later this month, the ongoing debate surrounding Starbuck’s participation highlights the complexities of diversity within professional settings. Greenwood’s commitment to understanding a full range of viewpoints serves as a reminder of the challenges HR professionals face in navigating a polarized landscape.
