‘Purple Rain’ Musical Premieres in Minneapolis, Aims for Broadway

The highly anticipated musical adaptation of Prince’s iconic film and album, “Purple Rain,” premiered on Thursday night at the State Theatre in Minneapolis. After several years of development and a six-month delay to refine creative elements, this world premiere marks the first step towards a future Broadway run scheduled to follow the show’s Minnesota engagement, which concludes on November 23, 2023.
With music composed by Prince, the musical features a book by Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, and is directed by Lileana Blain-Cruz, known for her previous work at local venues, including the 2017 production of “The Bluest Eye” at the Guthrie Theater. The role of the Kid, a semi-autobiographical representation of Prince, is played by theatrical newcomer Kris Kollins, while Broadway veteran Rachel Webb portrays his love interest, Apollonia.
The narrative closely follows the film’s storyline, depicting the Kid’s journey through the Minneapolis music scene as he strives to win over Apollonia. Music supervisor and arranger Jason Michael Webb emphasized the power of Prince’s music as the central force of the production. “The truth and love of Prince’s music is so powerful that it is going to be the driving force,” he stated, highlighting the collaborative efforts with longtime Prince associates Bobby Z and Morris Hayes.
Adaptation from film to stage poses challenges. Jacobs-Jenkins noted that while the original screenplay by Albert Magnoli and William Blinn provides foundational elements, the live performance allows for fresh explorations of characters and themes. He remarked, “Film and live performance are so different that no matter what you do, it’s going to be an original thing.” This creative freedom is central to the musical’s unique identity.
The production team meticulously studied Prince’s notebooks, engaged with individuals involved in the original film, and examined literature on Prince to capture the essence of his artistry. Jacobs-Jenkins pointed out that while the film reflects a distinctly 1980s culture, its themes of creative self-discovery remain relevant today.
“There’s so much power in ‘Purple Rain’ to see an artist who’s in the process of finding himself,” Blain-Cruz stated. She underscored the importance of addressing fundamental human questions such as identity and collaboration.
Choreographer Ebony Williams, known for her work on Broadway and with artists like Beyoncé and Alicia Keys, shared her approach to the choreography. “Prince’s music makes you feel alive, and that resonates through your body,” she explained. Williams aims to embody the spirit of Prince’s rebellious and brave musical approach.
Preview performances began on October 16, 2023, leading up to the official opening night set for November 5, 2023. These previews allow the creative team and cast to refine the performance, ensuring a polished production. Tickets for the preview shows are still available, with prices starting at $87.50. Interested attendees can purchase tickets at the State Theatre box office or through their website.
As the world awaits the full opening of the “Purple Rain” musical, its journey from Minneapolis to Broadway is already generating excitement, promising to honor Prince’s legacy while exploring new artistic horizons.
