Majority of Ukrainians Want Zelensky to Step Down Post-War

A recent survey indicates that a significant majority of Ukrainians would like President Volodymyr Zelensky to resign after the ongoing conflict with Russia concludes. Conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS), the poll highlights a notable shift in public sentiment regarding Zelensky’s leadership, even as he continues to garner support during the wartime crisis.

The KIIS survey, released on October 16, 2023, found that approximately 75 percent of respondents believe Zelensky should not remain in office following the war. This suggests a growing skepticism about his long-term leadership, despite the fact that 60 percent still express trust in him. This figure, however, marks a stark decline from a peak of 90 percent support observed shortly after the Russian invasion began in February 2022.

The current trust levels present a contrast to pre-invasion data, where only 37 percent of the population reported confidence in Zelensky. While the war has unified the nation against external aggression, it has not insulated the President from the typical decline in popularity that accompanies prolonged crises.

Public sentiment reveals a complex view of Zelensky’s future role. While 41 percent of those surveyed believe he should remain politically active after the war, a substantial 36 percent advocate for his complete withdrawal from politics. Alarmingly, 14 percent of respondents suggested that Zelensky should face criminal prosecution for certain actions taken during his presidency, although the poll did not elaborate on specific allegations.

Concerns over governance and corruption appear to be influencing these perspectives. Criticism has emerged surrounding a controversial bill that weakened Ukraine’s anti-corruption investigative bodies. Zelensky has defended this legislation as vital for countering Russian influence, yet it has raised significant concerns among various sections of the public, likely contributing to his declining approval ratings.

The survey results align with findings from other independent polling organizations, such as Gallup, which reported an 84 percent approval rating for Zelensky before the invasion and a 67 percent trust rating in a recent August survey. Although Gallup’s figures are slightly more favorable, they further illustrate the downward trend in public confidence.

The timing of these surveys is critical, especially following the introduction of the anti-corruption bill, which has sparked debate among the populace. Zelensky’s decision to suspend the 2024 presidential election under martial law due to the ongoing conflict has also likely influenced public perceptions of his leadership style and decisions.
