Humboldt County Urges Flu Vaccination Ahead of Seasonal Spike

With flu season approaching, Humboldt County’s public health department is urging residents to get their seasonal flu vaccines. This proactive measure aims to reduce illness and maintain community health as influenza cases typically surge between October and April. According to Dr. Candy Stockton, Humboldt County’s Health Officer, October is often the optimal time for vaccination.

In an email statement, Dr. Stockton noted, “This year, we haven’t started seeing an increase in flu yet, so there’s still time to get your flu vaccine before the surge hits us.” The county monitors wastewater levels, which usually rise one to two weeks before a flu outbreak, but currently, California has not reported such increases.

In addition to the flu, Dr. Stockton recommends residents consider the COVID-19 vaccine within the next few weeks. She explained that, based on historical patterns, the state could see a smaller peak in COVID cases between December and March. “Last year, we had a large peak during the late summer and a second smaller peak in the winter months,” she stated.

Residents who contracted COVID-19 this summer can wait four to six months after their infection before receiving a booster shot. Dr. Stockton emphasized the importance of seasonal vaccines due to the ever-changing nature of viruses.

“Vaccines work by teaching your immune system how to respond quickly to a specific virus or bacteria when you are exposed to it,” she explained. “For many illnesses, including influenza and COVID, a recent infection will also teach your immune system to respond quickly. However, because both viruses change rapidly, our immune systems can forget how to respond over time. This is why annual vaccines are necessary.”

Public health officials stress that vaccination is crucial, especially for vulnerable populations. “While the very young, older adults, and those with existing health conditions are at higher risk for severe illness from the flu, even young, healthy adults can face serious complications,” Dr. Stockton added.

Missed days of work or school due to illness can significantly impact families and the community. “It is challenging for working families if children are too sick to attend school, particularly when many do not have paid sick leave,” she noted. “Our community relies on health care providers, teachers, and first responders being able to work, so getting vaccinated helps maintain a strong community.”

Recent changes to the COVID-19 vaccination guidelines by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have led to a shift in how vaccines are accessed. In some areas, individuals may need a prescription to obtain booster shots. However, Dr. Stockton reassured residents that California’s public health infrastructure, supported by health insurers, is prepared to provide vaccines as effectively as last year.

Humboldt County follows vaccination recommendations from the California Department of Public Health, which aligns with the newly formed West Coast Health Alliance. A joint statement from the governors of Oregon, Washington, and California criticized the politicization of the CDC, emphasizing the need for science-based health policies.

Specific vaccine recommendations based on age groups and risk factors are available at the California Department of Public Health’s website.

For further information, residents can reach out to public health officials. The proactive measures taken now can significantly reduce the risk of serious illness for individuals and the broader community during this flu season.
