Matthew Popkin Outlines Vision for Longmont’s Sustainable Growth
Matthew Popkin, a candidate for Longmont’s City Council Ward 2, has detailed his vision for the future of the city, focusing on sustainable growth and community development. With a background in public policy and extensive experience in urban planning, Popkin aims to position Longmont as an innovative hub that balances urban development with environmental preservation.
Enhancing Community Assets
Popkin believes that the Vance Brand Airport can serve as a key asset for the Longmont community. He envisions the airport transforming into a vibrant destination featuring a restaurant, lounge, event space, and even a library extension. Popkin suggests that by utilizing the city-owned electric utility, Longmont could attract electric aviation companies, fostering partnerships with the St. Vrain Innovation Center for student projects and job training opportunities.
“We have the potential to create a modern community space that not only enhances aviation but also serves as a gathering point for residents,” Popkin stated. His approach reflects a broader commitment to integrating sustainable practices into local governance.
Proactive Growth Strategies
With Longmont on track to become the largest city in Boulder County, Popkin emphasizes the need for proactive management of urban development. He advocates for the redevelopment of old industrial sites, such as the Sugar Mill and lower downtown areas, into vibrant spaces that include housing, retail, and public amenities.
“This is why I became involved in local politics three years ago,” Popkin explained. “We need to ensure our growth preserves the character of our city, cleans up hazardous sites, and provides diverse housing options.” His strategies aim to alleviate development pressure on existing neighborhoods while supporting small businesses.
Commitment to Open Space Preservation
Popkin’s commitment to Longmont’s Open Space is deeply personal. He cites his marriage at Sandstone Ranch as a significant connection to the area’s natural beauty. He plans to implement the Open Space Master Plan fully, which includes adding more land to the program and improving trail connections.
In August, Popkin secured unanimous support from the City Council to incorporate an additional 17 acres into the Open Space initiative. He also led efforts to establish an “urban renewal innovation zone” aimed at streamlining the redevelopment process for quality developers.
“Fully implementing these measures is crucial to reducing pressure on our core Open Space areas,” Popkin stated. His focus on environmental preservation aligns with his broader vision of creating a sustainable and thriving Longmont.
As Longmont continues to evolve, Popkin’s proposals highlight a commitment to balancing growth with community values, ensuring that the city remains a desirable place to live and work for all residents.
