Ruth Lemay, a remarkable centenarian living in Virginia Beach, Virginia, demonstrates that aging does not mean slowing down. At the age of 100, she maintains an active lifestyle that includes regular visits to the gym, cooking her own meals, and even living independently. Her story gained attention after Evynn and Ryan O’Leary, health and exercise content creators, showcased her impressive exercise routine on Instagram, which has since gone viral.

In an interview with TODAY.com, Lemay shared her insights into the keys to successful aging and longevity. Her daily routine emphasizes the importance of physical activity, a balanced diet, mental health care, and the occasional indulgence.

Keys to Longevity: Lemay’s Approach

Born in 1925, Ruth Lemay has defied expectations for someone her age. Her lifestyle stands in stark contrast to common perceptions of aging, which may explain her enviable health. Her daughter, Annette Parker, 78, lives with her and supports her daily activities. According to Parker, “I probably take it for granted because we’ve had her for so long and we just do everything together.”

The O’Learys, intrigued by Lemay’s consistent presence at the gym, decided to document her workout routine. Their video, which has garnered over 600,000 likes on Instagram, highlights her commitment to staying active. Ryan O’Leary remarked, “We were truly surprised to learn that she was 100 years old, as she looks incredible for her age. The greatest lesson in longevity we are taking from her is the importance of staying active.”

A Balanced Lifestyle

Lemay attributes her longevity to a combination of regular exercise and a healthy diet. She trains three times a week at the gym, where she rides a recumbent bike for 30 minutes, takes a five-minute break, and then rides for another 30 minutes. Additionally, she walks more than a mile on an indoor track. On days when she does not go to the gym, she engages in stretching and weightlifting at home. “One of my favorite exercises is walking. It always made me feel better,” she said.

Her dietary choices further contribute to her well-being. Lemay has never smoked and does not consume alcohol. She continues to cook for herself, enjoying a varied diet that includes chicken, seafood, fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and fat-free yogurt. “I love vegetables. I grew up in the countryside, and my dad grew all kinds of vegetables, and they were wonderful for you,” she noted.

Despite her dedication to health, Lemay allows herself occasional treats. Every Friday, she indulges in hot dogs from a local restaurant, stating, “That’s my only treat of the week. I like hot dogs, and I get two hot dogs. They have chili, mustard, and a lot of onions. And that’s the kind I like.”

Interestingly, Lemay’s family history does not suggest longevity. Her mother passed away at 65, and her father at 74. Despite this, she reports having experienced fewer health issues, having only undergone a heart valve replacement. “I have been luckier in that way,” she said.

Lemay’s independence is another pillar of her longevity. Having worked as a manager of a credit union, she ensured financial stability that allowed her to live alone until the age of 98. She currently resides in her own home, a testament to her self-sufficiency.

Social connections also play a vital role in her mental health. According to Annette Parker, her mother is very social and engages with her community. “When she walks outside, neighbors stop in their cars and talk. So she probably talks more than she walks, but that’s fine,” Parker remarked.

Ruth Lemay’s story serves as an inspiring example of how an active lifestyle, balanced nutrition, and strong social connections can contribute to a fulfilling life at any age. Her approach to aging challenges common stereotypes and highlights the potential for vitality in one’s later years.
