Shelley Hoss Celebrates 25 Years of Philanthropic Leadership

Shelley Hoss, the chief executive officer of the Orange County Community Foundation (OCCF), is marking a significant milestone as California’s longest-tenured community foundation leader. With over 25 years of dedicated service, Hoss has transformed the foundation into a powerhouse of philanthropy, overseeing approximately $100 million in grants and scholarships annually from around 650 charitable funds. Since its inception in 1989, OCCF has facilitated more than $1.6 billion in cumulative giving, solidifying its position among the leading community foundations in the United States.
In recognition of her outstanding contributions, UC Irvine plans to honor Hoss with its highest alumni award in November 2025. Hoss, a graduate of UC Irvine with a Master’s degree in Business and Public Administration earned in 1987, has devoted nearly four decades to the nonprofit sector. Her previous roles include serving as the associate executive director of the Orangewood Children’s Foundation and as the executive director of Girls Inc. of Orange County.
Hoss remains focused on addressing the pressing challenges faced by communities during a time marked by increasing polarization and uncertainty. She reflects, “My sights are on the future, but I am leaning into the work. In some ways, I feel like I spent my whole career getting ready to show up for this moment.”
Hoss’s journey into philanthropy was a gradual realization, rather than a sudden epiphany. After earning her undergraduate degree from UC Riverside, she sought a career that would provide purpose and meaning. A pivotal experience came during a summer spent volunteering at a camp for children in the foster care system. The impact of witnessing these children’s transformative experiences ignited Hoss’s passion for nonprofit work.
Throughout her tenure at OCCF, Hoss has identified several key lessons that have shaped her approach to philanthropy. “Orange County is a community of first-generation wealth, self-made people,” she notes. Many individuals she works with have personal stories of overcoming adversity, often supported by philanthropy. The joy and fulfillment derived from giving back are evident among those actively engaged in charitable efforts, as Hoss emphasizes the profound sense of purpose it brings.
Engaging with the community is vital, and Hoss encourages others to find causes that resonate with them. “Whether it’s helping a community garden or spending time with an elderly neighbor, connecting with what matters to you is essential,” she advises. This personal investment not only benefits the community but also fosters individual well-being.
Hoss also highlights the importance of civil discourse in today’s climate. “We need to exercise that muscle of really listening,” she states, pointing to the necessity of understanding differing viewpoints. In an era where division often dominates conversations, she advocates for open dialogue and the courage to engage with those holding contrasting opinions.
As she looks to the future, Hoss’s commitment to the community foundation remains unwavering. “I have spent almost 40 years building up social capital,” she explains. With a clear understanding of the foundation’s needs and her role in fulfilling them, Hoss continues to prioritize meaningful engagement and impactful philanthropy.
While contemplating the next chapter of her career at OCCF, Hoss expresses gratitude for the opportunity to serve. “As long as everyone still wants me around and I’m having a positive impact, I can’t imagine what trouble I would get into if I didn’t have a useful purpose.” For now, her focus is on the work that lies ahead, fully dedicated to making a difference in her community.
